PINK in the Tropics CAMPAIGN TO INCREASE THE PTSS (Article by Heidi Gibson, Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette, October 21, 2010)
This was the second meeting this year between members of Pink in the Tropics and the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh to discuss raising the subsidy for rural and remote patients travelling to major centres for critical medical care.
Pink in the Tropics President Natalie Halse and Vice President Deborah Kachel described the meeting as positive with signs that the Government may increase funds for patients receiving longer-term treatments. "The Government's position is that most people can manage the extra expenses associated with travel and accommodation for one or two days of treatment so they will focus on easing the expenses for longer term patients," she said.
"While we'd like the subsidy raised for all patients, this is at least a step in the right direction after 22 years of no increases at all".
Although Ms Halse said the Premier would offer no guarantees, the Government has ordered Queensland Health to develop a model for increasing the subsidy.
The model is due for completion in January when it will be considered by the politicians and any increases will then be announced in the June budget. (2011).
"The model also promises to link the subsidy to CPI increases so that it will no longer be left neglected for decades," Ms Halse said.
While the Premier reportedly described the matter as high on her radar, Ms Halse said her group would be checking on progress at the end of January. (2011)
It was the support group's second meeting with the Premier as part of their state-wide campaign to increase the $30 a day paid to rural and remote patients for travel and accommodation.
The first meeting in February was followed with a petition signed by more than 11,000 people supporting an increase.
"As a result of the petition Queensland Health is reviewing the administrative procedures associated with the subsidy - to make them more user-friendly and efficient," Ms Halse said.
"Our group will now also join the committee advising on these revisions and will advocate for faster reimbursement times."
